We all know maple trees. You might have one in your yard. Spalted maple is not a separate species. It gets its name from the spalting contained within some dying maple trees. The black streaks are not actually wood, they are caused by a fungus that decays the wood and creates intricate patterns. If the maple tree in your yard has has spalting, that is bad news. I suggest you cut it down and promptly plop it on my front lawn. Woodworkers love it.
I save my most promising pen blanks for the rollerball format. The large uninterrupted barrel allows each piece of wood to tell its story in full. The writing experience is superior to ballpoint pens, but that is almost besides the point. To me, this particular design feels like watching a movie in IMAX versus iPhone.
