Yes, that redwood. If you are worried that I cut down an ancient and majestic Californian Redwood for this pen, fear not. Felling a redwood tree is highly regulated, and sometimes mature trees need to be culled for environmental reasons. Also, the average volume of a redwood tree is about 53 million cubic inches of wood, and the volume of wood I used to make this pen is just under 3 cubic inches. If you do the math, I could make about 18 million pens from a single tree. Carefully crafting sustainably sourced wood into a functional art piece is the best way to honor the legacy of the tree.
I save my most promising pen blanks for the rollerball format. The large uninterrupted barrel allows each piece of wood to tell its story in full. The writing experience is superior to ballpoint pens, but that is almost besides the point. To me, this particular design feels like watching a movie in IMAX versus iPhone.
